We stayed for 4 nights at Turtle Bay and this was the highlight of our wonderful trip. We booked the Ohana ( family) package for a dad and 3 daughters (15,11,10) whom have never surfed before. Our main instructor was Jamie , and he was just great. He explained how to get up on the board in 5 steps. We practiced a couple of times on land then took the boards out. The surfing area is right next to the resort and my wife had a great view to watch us from the pool area. Jamie would help each of us wait for the right wave and tell us when to start paddling and when to stand up , and occasionally give us a push. To my amazement, we all were able to stand up and actually surf for 5-20 seconds. The area seemed very safe and they gave us good instructions on how to fall and avoid the reef. Jamie had a helper, Kiovo, who was also great. He waited closer to the shore to make sure my daughters were ok and got headed back to the breaks safely. At the end , we got a shirt and CD with great action pictures. I have never posted a review on anything before, but this activity greatly exceeded my expectations.
Probably the worst experience I've had at any surf shop, staff was rude and very unhelpful. For somewhere that is supposed to rent out equipment they sure didn't want us to go surfing. The waves weren't even a factor as they were quite small. They seemed to doubt that there was surfing in Canada and we were too "inexperienced". Instead of being helpful and informative, they told us "go look for yourselves". I'd take your business to one of the neighboring towns as your experience will surely be better, ours was.
This business uses very shady business practice. They rent very used dinged cheap boards (like NSP) from Costco and if you are not very diligent marking all dings before you rent a board they certainly will try to charge you. They have backed off only after I have started taking pictures of multiple dings of the very used board and said that will contest the charge with my credit card. Very unpleasant experience.
